Island Of The Sea disarms Ammo upon return

Ft. Washington, MD — There are certain tracks that bring the best out of horses. For Island Of The Sea, Rosecroft Raceway seems to be that place.

Owned by trainer Eric Ell and his wife Lisa, the 7-year-old altered son of Always A Virgin parlayed a perfect pocket journey from driver Jason Thompson into a win Monday night (Sept. 16) in the $10,000 Open on the opening night of the Fall Meet.

It was his third win in 20 starts this year, and his first outing for purse money since July 21. Last year, he won 12 times in 34 races and was near flawless in his appearances at Rosecroft.

Ammo cut fractions of :26, :55.3, and 1:24 for Jonathan Roberts, but simply got outkicked by Island Of The Sea in :27.3 on the way home, who stopped the timer in 1:51.4.

“I qualified him and basically had him in a headlock,” Thompson said. “Eric just said try not to be first over. I told him I didn’t think that would be a problem, and he’s just a machine.”

Trainer Kristyann Rash picked up her first career win as Russell Foster guided Rash’s Z’s Dream to a win in the lid lifter on the card, in 1:54.1.

Foster won twice on the card as did Johnathan Ahle. Trainer McKenzie Kiel celebrated her wedding anniversary with a training double.
